By
the time you complete your Ph.D. degree, you will realize
that your thesis advisor's reputation trumps that of
your PhD-granting institution. Even so, some institutions
and graduate programs garner more respect than others.
Since graduate students rarely know who their thesis
advisor will be prior to enrollment, it is important
to consider the reputation of the institution when evaluating
graduate programs in the biomedical sciences. Ask your
undergraduate advisor, department chair, or research
mentor for advice on which Ph.D. programs have a good
reputation.
Another way to gauge the reputation of a particular
graduate program is to consult The Institute for Scientific
Information (ISI), which periodically publishes lists
of highly-cited, high-impact researchers, departments,
and institutions. Although most of the ISI's research
is available by payment only, some information is available
