Although
NIH statistics are useful for identifying vigorous research
conducted in traditional medical school departments,
some PhDs are awarded by non-traditional medical school
departments or graduate programs. This is particularly
true for subjects that are interdisciplinary in nature,
such as Cancer Biology. While some institutions have
Cancer Biology Ph.D. programs that draw participating
faculty from traditional medical school departments,
the NIH doesn't publish annual statistics on these types
of interdisciplinary Ph.D. programs.
